Leading a STM Medical Team

Early Pre-Trip Tasks

Partner Selection

Medical trips will most often involve two- or three-way partnerships: the sending organization, the national host, and often a ministry partner such as Medical Missions International or Medical Ambassadors/LifeWind International.

The sending organization, of course, is your own church or other organization that is sponsoring the trip. The national host is the receiving entity - a church, Christian school, orphanage, or other community organization. This is the organization that is inviting the team to come minister with them. It is with them that the trip objectives are defined (see next section). You should be given the name and contact information for the person at the host organization who has responsibility and authority over this joint project and it is with this person that your ongoing communication will be critical. Communication by phone or Skype is recommended, as it allows a two-way dialogue with immediate feedback and clarification and a greater sense of relationship building that is difficult to achieve by email.

Logistics and organizational support can be managed between the sending organization and the national host, or with a third-party ministry partner. Medical Missions International works with evangelism and church planting projects all over the world and has a very mature and much appreciated approach to short-term missions. Medical Ambassadors/LifeWind International has refined the model of utilizing a strategy of Community Health Evangelism to bring health and spiritual care to those in need.
