Leading a STM Medical Team

Late Pre-Trip Tasks

Budget, Part III

Examining the mouth
As you enter the last few weeks prior to departure, the budget will come into sharper focus. By now you should have given the team members a final cost that they are responsible for. If you have not already done so, please review the prior budget sections Budget, Part I and Budget, Part II.

There are two major sources of income: funds the individual team member is responsible for, and funds donated, given to, or raised for use by the team as a whole. Donated funds can come from appeals to organizations or individuals for funds to cover costs of the ministry activities: medicines, vaccines, medical supplies, evangelism supplies, crafts, Bibles, etc. Some churches have mission budgets that contain funds to be used for the purpose of supporting trips. Some teams plan and execute fund-raising events: car washes, craft sales, bake sales, garage sales, etc.

Individual team members also can raise support. In fact, team members should be encouraged to seek prayer partners by sending letters to friends and family who will partner with them in this way. These letters often contain gentle (and sometimes not so gentle) appeals for financial support. Here is an example of an actual prayer letter that was sent prior to a trip to Peru: Sample Prayer Letter. This document will give some ideas of how to word an appeal for support: Support Letter ideas.
